THE WHITE HORSE, FOLKESTONE

The White Horse on Cheriton Hill was constructed in 2003 to a design by local artist Charles Newington (further information www.castlearts.co.uk).

The site is part of the Folkestone to Etchinghill Escarpment Site of Special Scientific Interest and is designated as a Special Area for Conservation, of European importnace for wildlife especially orchids.  You can find common spotted orchids growing in the ancient chalk grassland close to the white horse.

The North Downs Way national trail follows the crest of the downs.  The site is open to the public under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act.  You are encouraged not to drive the narrow lanes on to the downs, but to walk along the footpaths from Newington / Peene or from Folkestone.  Cycle Route No 17 passes nearby.

The site is privately owned and is no longer managed with the assistance of the White Cliffs Countryside Project.
