Bug Hunts and Bug Homes - Romney
Event Date: 28/05/2026 10:00 - 12:00
Free Event
Booking not required
Join Rangers Jasmine and James for a wild family adventure at Romney Warren Local Nature Reserve!
Roll up your sleeves and help us give our Bug Hotel a brand‑new makeover, then head out on a mini‑beast safari to meet the amazing creatures that will soon call it home.
This is a Drop-in event, there is no need to book. Just turn up anytime between 10 am and 12 pm.
Our much‑loved bug hotel needs a little TLC to make sure it’s ready to house thousands of fascinating insects. With your help, we’ll create cosy hideaways that provide a safe refuge through the colder months and the perfect place for bugs to raise their families.
After building, grab your explorer tools and set off to search the reserve for bugs of all shapes and sizes. Get up close, discover who lives where, and find out why these tiny creatures are so important. Rangers Jasmine and James will be on hand to help identify your finds and share lots of fun facts along the way.
We’ll provide all the materials and guidance on how to create the bug hotel, but if you wish to bring along your own materials to contribute, we welcome that! We would be looking for:
- Bricks with holes
- Old bits of untreated wood
- Plant pots (no plastic, please!)
- Bamboo canes
- Sticks
- Pine cones
Make sure to cast your vote on the day on what the newly vamped bug hotel should be named!

Event Location - Romney Warren
Romney Warren Local Nature Reserve (LNR) and Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) surrounds the Romney Marsh Visitor Centre.
Previous land use involved sheep grazing and gravel extraction which has created dune grassland and seasonal ponds. These features now provide nationally important habitats for a range of wildlife.
The site is easy to explore with three circular waymarked nature trails; the dragonfly trail (0.2 miles), the rabbit trail (0.4 miles) and the sheep trail (1 mile) with information panels about the wildlife and history along the routes. Romney Warren is managed by Romney Marsh Countryside Partnership on behalf of Folkestone and Hythe District Council.
